Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Richmond Plains is certified organic by BioGro New Zealand and biodynamic by Demeter.
Richmond Plains produced New Zealand’s first Sauvignon Blanc from both certified organic and biodynamic grapes.
Sauvignon Blanc is ideally suited to the Nelson region where a combination of warm, sunny days and cool autumn nights, help to create the intense varietal flavours for which this flagship New Zealand wine is recognised.
Nose: Fresh herbaceous characters with gooseberry and capsicum notes.
Palate: Delicious gooseberry, capsicum, passionfruit and lime / citrus flavours with a lovely background of mineral and nettle tones. Fresh, fruity & vibrant with good weight and length. A very versatile and popular wine that complements a wide variety of food styles especially seafood and ideal as an aperitif.
Vintage: The old vines are on Scott Henry trellising whilst the new vines were trellised on vertical shoot position. A long sunny autumn produced excellent quality fruit with great flavours. Fruit was picked in mid April.
Wine Making: All fruit was crushed and de-stemmed before being cool fermented to preserve the vibrant, fresh Sauvignon characters.
Diet: Suitable for vegan diet.
Alcohol: 13.5 % Acidity: 7.7 Residual Sugar: 3.2 g/l
This is packed with ripe fruit flavours - passion fruit, feijoa, lime - together with the classic green capsicum notes. The palate is concentrated and vibrant with excellent intensity, finishing long and succulent. At its best: now to 2015. «««««

Full-bodied and dry with sweet-fruit characters and fresh, vibrant tropical-fruit and herbaceous flavours, racy and long. «««« - Michael Cooper
Bright, full, even, pale straw-yellow colour. This has a soft, full nose of fruit aromatics in the cooler spectrum, showing gooseberries, nettles and fresh herbs, along with capsicums and white floral notes. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, cool fruit flavours of gooseberries, herbs and minerals are expressed with restraint, alongside lacy acidity. The mouthfeel is smooth and harmonious, but fresh with good brightness and energy. A little alcohol drive is noticeable, leading to a subtly flavoured, long finish with herbal and nettle-like nuances. This is a fine, smooth, cool-spectrum Sauvignon Blanc that will develop more flavour richness over the next 2 years. Match with salads and vegetables.

It has crisp, bright flavours bursting with gooseberry flavours and a hint of white pepper. A small portion was fermented on old oak puncheos (big barrels) and this has added a super textural element to the crisp acidity and fruit intensity.
- Neil Hodgson, Nelson Mail 28 Sept 12
Over the last few vintages Richmond Plains has cut its own, dry, grassy, zesty path with Sauvignon Blanc. The 2011 was full of verve and tenacity; the 2012 is equally lively and minerally. I can think no better drink to have with an asparagus and blue cheese tart, or fresh fish prepared simply. - John Saker, Sunday 21 Oct 2012
