Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Richmond Plains produced New Zealand’s first certified organic Sauvignon Blanc.

Sauvignon Blanc is ideally suited to the Nelson region where a combination of warm, sunny days and cool autumn nights, help to create the intense varietal flavours for which this flagship New Zealand wine is recognised.

All Richmond Plains grapes are grown on our own vineyard.  Both the growing of our grapes and winemaking are certified organic by BioGro New Zealand.  We also run our vineyard with a full biodynamic program.

Nose:  Fresh herbaceous characters with gooseberry and capsicum notes.

Palate:  Delicious gooseberry, capsicum, passionfruit and lime / citrus flavours with a lovely background of mineral and nettle tones.  Fresh, fruity & vibrant with good weight and length.   A very versatile and popular wine that complements a wide variety of food styles especially seafood and ideal as an aperitif.

Vintage:  The old vines are on Scott Henry trellising whilst the new vines were trellised on vertical shoot position. A hot, dry summer contributed to an early harvest with good quality fruit and excellent flavours.  Fruit was picked in mid April.

Wine Making:  All fruit was crushed and de-stemmed before being cool fermented to preserve the vibrant, fresh Sauvignon characters.

Sulphur:  This wine is made with minimal levels of sulphur/SO2/preservative 220.

Vegan:  This wine is suitable for vegans.

 Alcohol: 12 %      Acidity: 6.2      Residual Sugar: 2.7 g/l

“Soft, ripe and easy drinking, this wine displays gooseberries and capsicum on the nose. These characteristics are joined by citrus undertones and a gentle acidity in the palate. Clean, dryish finish.”

"This is my new favourite Sauvignon Blanc. It's delicious. First taste impressions were of a deep, fruity flavour, infused with apple and citrus, followed by the gorgeous, long lasting aftertaste of something deeper and earthier (which I later discovered to be nettle – a herb I regularly drink in tea form and just adore for its health properties). Aside from the impressive taste of this wine, the story of this vineyard also won my heart.

Richmond Plains are a certified organic and biodynamic vineyard. For me it was a lovely feeling knowing that the scrumptious wine I was sipping on had been so conscientiously prepared, adhering to the 'crème de la creme' of organic wine production standards – the biodynamic process. Attaining this level of certification requires not only years of work, but also profound dedication.

Lars and Sam Jensen, along with their team, ensure that every little aspect of the production of Richmond Plains Wines is environmentally sustainable – from the paper they use in their office, to the glass bottles, to ecological balance of the vineyard. The vineyard is rich in plant, animal and insect diversity. These people don't spray, rather they let nature do the work, so no one plant or insect can dominate and natural balance continues. This style of viticulture isn't simply a business, it's a way of life. When you buy this wine (it cost just under twenty dollars at my local organic shop – which I found to be a surprisingly good price), you're not only investing in an impressive drop, but in a way of life that is quite simply doing earth a huge favour."
